The campus offers a complete range of services, all of which share a common goal: meeting the needs of a large student population. The campus may best be described as "a city within a city," where finding your way and learning the ropes is easy thanks to effective tutoring services and competent academic advisors and coordinators.
The city of Milan offers a wide range of housing options. UCSC may have some rooms available on campus but these are very limited and cannot be guaranteed. UCSC works with Milano International Living (MIL), a housing service located on campus, that places students in shared apartments across the city. The apartments provided through MIL Service include wireless Internet connections, utilities (water and electricity), cleaning service, basic cable television, and are fully furnished including extra amenities such as a DVD player, television set, and kitchenware. For more information visit the MIL Service website at www.milservice.com
Upon arrival in Milan, UCSC International will host several Welcome Day Orientations. Through these events, students will gain invaluable insight into the particulars of attaining a Permesso di Soggiorno (Residency Permit), the ATM monthly pass for public transit, information regarding registration and enrolment in courses, and other useful information regarding the city of Milan and the UCSC campus. Students will be taken on a tour of the campus and surrounding areas and will be familiarized with campus facilities such as the cafeterias and library. Furthermore, students will be introduced to the international student associations on campus as well as have an opportunity to meet fellow international students who will be experiencing similar problems and anxieties about adapting to a new city, country, and culture.
Living in Milan provides a myriad of exciting activities in which to participate. With such a rich cultural and religious history there are no shortages of fascinating sites to visit in Milan, such as the Duomo, the Castello Sforzesco, the Navigli, Brera, and many more. For sports fans, Stadio San Siro (Stadio Giuseppe Meazza), home to both AC Milan and Internazionale Milan, provides an intense and famous venue to attend soccer matches. Restaurants, bars, and night clubs also can easily be found throughout the city ensuring enjoyable night-life activities any day of the week. During the months of Spring and Autumn fashion shows are prominent in the city and La Scala Opera House hosts yearlong ballets, operas, and plays for those seeking a more elegant way to spend the nights. Furthermore, Milan's positioning in northern Italy allows for day/weekend trips to cities such as Genova, Venice, Torino, and Verona, ski trips to the Alps, visits to beautiful Lake Como, or hiking in Cinque Terre. Access to both the Adriatic Sea to the east and the Ligurian Sea to the west provide equally magnificent opportunities to see the Italian coastline.
At UCSC there are two prominent student organizations, the Erasmus Student Network (ESN) and Exchange Student Erasmus Guide (ESEG), working to assist all international students studying at UCSC. These associations often organize trips to the many sites within Milan as well as the surrounding areas, giving students the opportunity to experience these in the comfort of well-organized and informative excursions. Additionally, ESN and ESEG can assist student athletes interested in joining club teams at UCSC. Whether exploring on one's own or joining a student organized event, the opportunities to experience Milan and Italy are infinite when studying at UCSC.
UCSC International organizes once a semester a week-end trip. Locations will vary per semester and will highlight the treasures of Northern Italian culture such as Padova, Parma, Arezzo or Siena. Students will discover the sights, sounds and tastes (architecture, wine tasting, culinary specialties, and much more) of particular Northern Italian regions.
