Business, Experiencing Italian Excellence

Summer 2011

The International Relations Office (IRO) and ALTIS, Postgraduate School of Business & Society of the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore (UCSC) in Milan, Italy will offer "Experiencing Italian Excellence" in Summer 2011, an international summer program for business students interested in acquiring direct knowledge and experience of Italian business expertise.

The program, taught by both academic and professional experts, offers interaction and up-close exposure to the best practices of the Italian entrepreneurial system. Particular attention will be paid to fashion & design, tourism, agribusiness, art, small and medium size enterprises (SMEs), industrial clusters and entrepreneurship.

These Italian excellences will be presented in:
· Classroom lectures
· Professional testimonials
· Field visits to businesses, industrial clusters, as well as research and design centers
· Seminars with experts and professionals involved in international commerce

Classes will take place on the UCSC Milan Campus from June 27 until July 22, 2010. Accommodation will be provided from Saturday, June 25 until Saturday, July 23.


STRUCTURE

The summer program offers 88 contact hours (worth a total of 12 ECTS credits) divided as follows:
· 1 core unit: 44 contact hours (6 ECTS)
· 4 topic modules: 44 hours (6 ECTS)

LANGUAGE
The language of instruction is English.

PROGRAM CONTENT

To view the syllabus of the last edition of the program, click here! The 2011 syllabus will be available upon the beginning of the program. The contents will be the same at the 2010 program with some possible variations on the field trips and faculty.

CORE UNIT:

The European Union and Italian Business
· Transition to market economies in Central and Eastern Europe
· European market integration
· Migration and multiculturalism in Europe
· SMEs and Industrial Clusters
· Competitive strategies of SMEs (the Italian perspective)
· Industrial districts of SMEs (the Italian experience)
· Organization and human resource management in SMEs
· Organizational structures in SMEs (a comparison with large enterprises; characteristics of the organizational culture of SMEs; human resource management in SMEs)
· Critical aspects of recruiting and developing talent, career planning and competence mapping in SMEs

TOPIC MODULES:

Fashion & Design
· History of Italian fashion
· Italian fashion abroad - marketing fashion
· The fashion industry and the emerging market competition
· The Italian handcraft: why it is surviving
· Industrial design: an added value

Agribusiness
· Strengths of Italian agribusiness
· Traditional food products in a worldwide context
· Bio-agriculture product manufacturing

Tourism
· The tourism system in Italy
· Managing tourism firms
· Managing heritage cities

Art and Business
· Art and corporate identity
· Art and brand communication
· Art and place of work
· Art and innovation
· Art and social & culture responsibility

FIELD TRIPS

Field trips will be offered in conjunction with specific topic areas of the course. For example, visits to Como will correspond with the fashion and design portion of the class, while a trip to Cinque Terre or Florence will be possible while studying tourism aspects. There are two or three potential Fridays during the course when these field studies will be scheduled. For an additional charge, students also will have the option of spending the entire weekend visiting these places of interest.

Tuition: € 2750 + €75 application fee

The accommodation provided is in shared apartments, double rooms, for the duration of the program.
